The Center of Photonic medicine of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and General Teaching Hospital in Prague (VFN) was established in 2006 as a multidisciplinary facility (dental medicine, dermatovenerology, surgery, ENT), where various specialists share their experience and modern technologies in the area of photomedicine (a branch of medicine involving the application of light). The Centre has several high-performance lasers which are used to treat patients who primarily have the following conditions: minor malignant and/or non-malignant tumours of the oral cavity, neck, and skin. These procedures are usually fully covered by health insurance companies. The Centre also provides correction of cosmetic defects at the prices found in the current price list.
The Centre’s main scope of activity is applied research. The Centre has successfully developed prototypes of several devices and has introduced new therapeutic techniques. In 2009, the Centre’s personnel was granted the Special Award of the Ministry of Health for Medical Research. The award was related to the Centre’s key programme, called Development of Photodynamic Therapy. With its unique position in the European context, the Centre cooperates with many foreign institutions and its physicians give lectures abroad on a regular basis. Center is offering PhD training program.
